Augustine, bishop of Hippo Regius (North Africa), deplores that the Pelagian heresy was invented, not by the bishops, presbyters or any other clerics, but by a monk. Augustine, "On the Proceedings of Pelagius", AD 417.

61. [... ] After the old heresies, a heresy has also recently been invented, not by bishops or presbyters, or any clergy, but by a certain sort of monk, which, under the guise of defending free will, has disputed against that “grace of God”,  which we have “through Jesus Christ our Lord” […].

At the end of 415 Pelagius was acquitted of the charge of heresy by the synod of Diospolis in Palestine. In 417 Augustine published the acts of the synod together with his commentary, adding an account of his previous dealings with Pelagius and other details of Pelagius`s life.
