Canon 1 of the Council of Toledo (Iberian Peninsula, AD 597) orders clerics of all grades to live chastely.
Canon 1

Canon 1

Those who follow the admonitions of the ancient fathers instruct the priest of God that they shall in every situation join things agreeable to the Holy Trinity with the deeds of the Catholic faith. Therefore, imploring for the holy chastity pleasing to God these admonitions do not only order bishops to keep their bodies chaste, but they also constitute that it shall be observed by presbyters and deacons who serve the altars of God. One who would like to violate his subjection to chastity, shall be punished by demotion from his grade and he shall no longer serve God. His bishop (sacerdotis sui) shall lock him up so that his example will correct the others and so that he himself could be revived by penance.

Title: Council of Toledo 597 AD, Concilium Toletanum a. 597
Origin: Toledo (Iberian Peninsula)
Denomination: Catholic/Nicene/Chalcedonian
The council gathered on 17 May 597 during the reign of Reccared. Sixteen bishops attended. It was a provincial council, not the general council of the whole kingdom, and for this reason it is not numbered (Gonzalvez Ruiz 2013).
