Afranius presbyter died in the peace of Our Lord Jesus Christ in the fifth day before the Ides of February in the year 744 of the era [= 9th of February 706].

The date on the inscription is given according to a Spanish Era, which began in 38 BC.

The inscription was found in 19th c. by Sebastião Philippes Martins Estácio da Veiga who send it from Mértola to Lisbon. Later the inscription was lost and is known only from a drawing from 1877 (Estácio da Veiga 1880: 116).
