Presbyter Vincentius of Rome restored and decorated the tomb of the martyr boy Gordianus. The metrical inscription on Via Latina in Rome, AD 375/379.
Haec quicumque uides nimio perfecta labore,
desine mirari, minus est quam martyr habetur.
hic aetate puer rudibus iam uictor in annis
tempore sub parvo matura laude triumphans
5 aspera innocuo maculauit tela cruore,
et sitiens tenero suxit sibi sanguine praedo.
sic uictor superas auras regnumque petiuit
et nos caelesti placidus de sede reuisit,
nomine Gordianus, Christi quem palma coronat.
10 marmore concludens arcam cineresque beatos
presbyter ornauit renouans Vincentius ultro.
Whoever you see this [opus] done with extraordinary craftsmanship (labore)
Give up astonishment, it is less than a martyr deserves.
He himself, being a boy, was already a winner in his teenage years
in the short term, triumphing with the glory of mature age
the cruel instruments of torture he stained with innocence,
and the thirsty raider sucked delicate blood out of him.
thus the victor hastened to the kingdom among the highest stars
and looks at us blandly from heavenly abode.
his name is Gordianus, adorned with the palm of Christ's victory.
crowning in marble a sarcophagus with the ashes of saints,
the presbyter Vicentius, while restoring it, decorated it of his own will.
