About the source:

Origin: Genève (Gaul)
The stone bearing this inscription was discovered in 1691 on the site of the former cemetery surrounding the church of St. Victor in Geneva. Allegedly, it was a burial site of the local bishops. The church, built originally at the end of the fifth century, was subsequently given, around the year 1000, to a nearby convent which belonged to the congregation of Cluny. St. Victor, along with its entire neighbourhood, was demolished in 1534 when the city was strengthening its defences. After its discovery in the seventeenth century, the stone bearing the inscription was embedded in a wall in the nearby Place d`Armes. All records concerning its subsequent history were lost, however, and its present whereabouts are unknown. The text of the epitaph is known from two transcriptions made by Flournois and Spon published in 1692 and 1730, respectively. In general, CIMAH follows Spon and RICG Flournois. The main difference between the two versions lies in the reading of the name (Aelloldus according to Flournois) and the ending formula, which Flournois noted as DNE REQVIESCAT instead of QUI REQVIESCAT by Spon.
