Canon 19 (18) of the First Council of Mâcon (Gaul, AD 581/583) demotes clerics of the higher rank who accuse the people of crimes they did not commit.

De his uero, qui innocentes aut principi aut iudicebus accusare conuicti fuerint, si clericus honoratior fuerit, ab officii sui ordine regradetur, si uero secularis communione priuabitur, donec malum, quod admisit, per publicam paenitentiam digna satisfactione conponat.

Concerning those who were convicted of accusing the innocent men in front of the ruler or the judges, if he was a cleric of higher dignity, he should be demoted from the office of his rank. If a layman, he should be deprived of communion until the evil that he has committed is corrected with worthy satisfaction by means of public penance.

The First Council of Mâcon was called by King Guntram and gathered bishops from his entire realm: the metropolitans of Lyon, Vienne, Sens, Bourges, and Besançon, and sixteen other bishops. The exact dating of this synod is unsure as the acts give us both the date of 1st November of the twenty-second year of King Guntram`s rule (i.e. 583) and that of the fifteen indiction (i.e. 581).
