Canon 7 of the Third Council of Braga (Iberian Peninsula, AD 675) forbids the buying ecclesiastical offices.
Canon 7

Canon 7

That no grace of honour be sold for the promise of gifts.

Although there are already many various rules among the ancient canons, we decided to promulgate this decision in a new form because it is not proper to give the gift of the Holy Spirit in exchange for money, and because it is necessary to often repeat what is ceaselessly held to be true. We decide that whoever receives a gift or a promise of a gift for conferring a priestly rank before the ordination and whoever dares to demand payment after ordination, both he and the person who gave the gift should be deprived of their offices according to the decision of the Council of Chalcedon.
