Fortunatus, presbyter and later bishop in North Africa, 4th/5th c.
Reference to prosopography: PCBE Afrique: Fortunatus 5
Intended for scholary use. For credentials see Bibliography
Chronological and geographical framework:
Attested presbyterial activity in Thagaste (Latin North Africa), Constantina (Latin North Africa),
Discussion:
In 1982 A. Mandouze wrote in PCBE that there was no basis for assuming that Fortunatus was connected to Augustine's circle before his episcopal ordination (as it had been suggested in Bibliotheque Augustinienne 31, 852). However, one of Augustine's sermons discovered and published in 1990s by F. Dolbeau proves that Augustine had known Fortunatus very well (see 877).
